OK .. ever had one of those "dinner dates" that start off not so great, and then go down hill from there? Well, I did on Saturday night. And as the dinner ran on, I find it more and more hilarious. Anyway, here is what happened ..
I had been e-mailing this individual for couple of weeks. We had met on a website, and seemed to hit it off. I knew upfront that he had a partner, but he said they were in an "open" relationship. However, I made it clear that I was looking for friends first.
So after a few "how about this date or that," we decided on Saturday. Before I go on, one thing I noticed is that he did not act like his partner was interested in meeting me. I asked was it because he thought I would try something or ?? Anyway, I showed up Saturday night, after driving for 45 minutes. These guys live south of the airport.
So, get there, say hello and off we go to eat. During the entire conversation, he stares at the tv in the corner of the restaurant. This was so distracting that I would actually hold my glass up to see if he noticed.
Then his entire conversation was about looking for a new job, how he was upset that a co-worker made a pass at his partner, his bad experiences with other jobs, and how he hooked up the night before with someone he met online. Seriously, there was not one question of "how are you or what do you do."
So between focusing on his world or trying to get his attention away from the tv [which he even admitted to watching when he said, "Don't you think spanish television is hilarious?" We were in a mexican restaurant], I did not think this evening could go more downhill.
But NO, I was wrong! The check came and I paid for it. Which I intended to do, because I invited him out. Good ole southern mannners. Did he say, "are you sure I can't contribute, hey next time it's my turn, or even thank you?" Nope.
So we drove back to his place, and I was ready to get gone. I told I was house sitting [which was true], and needed to get back. He gets out of the car, says, "nice meeting you," closes the door and walks away.
I just laughed the entire way home. I was not expecting a huge production number of gratitude, but at least a thank you!
