Was It Something I Said?

OK .. here is what happened .. PRODUCTREED clued me into the fantastic website www.bettybowers.com, which stars the fictional "Betty Bowers." One of Ms. Bowers statements is, "Jesus Paid The Price, But Visa Declined The Charge."

I think that is beyond funny. And seriously how can it even be taken as a slam against Jesus, the church, etc. ANYWAY, I told this to two of my co-workers today. You know what I received from them .. HORROR! One even said, "Paul, how can you go around making statements like that?"

PEOPLE get off of your moral high horse and lighten up!

Do you ever get so tired of having to "watch" everything you do at work? I mean it's not only the subtle warnings of "don't be tooooo gay," but just how every statement can be taken the wrong way.

Another example .. I work in a small office of 7 people. One of the bosses is a woman and I have made a statement in the past that she is the queen and we are her subjects. The several times I've mentioned it, everyone laughs, etc.

Well, back in February, one of the program managers for a company we work with came to Atlanta, and the office took her out to eat. Since this person was sitting next to me, she stated that she heard our boss was referred to as the queen. I then went around the table and explained this person was the prince, this person the knight, blah blah and that I was the court fool. I then pointed to the other female co-worker and said, "and so-and-so is the court courtesan." WELL, everyone except this co-worker laughed. She just turned silent and did not talk the rest of the meal.

I was told later that she was very hurt that I had referred to her as a slut. And that although everyone else laughed at my refrences, I needed to apologize.

???? WHAT ????

First of all lady, this was a joke which you had heard and laughed at before and second, the is a difference between slut and courtesan [although it may be minor to some]. I personally view courtesan as a compliment. Those women were often highly educated and possessed a great deal of power.

I just think it is interesting that work is someplace where you spend a majority of your time .. and yet you still have to watch what you say and who you are.
