Went out and bought, then watched THE BOYS IN THE BAND. I had only seen this film once when I was an undergrad. I knew the play and film were a piece of "gay history," but walked away feeling, "ok ............"
This weekend I came to truly appreciate the humor and sincerity of the work. Not to mention Micheal's apartment, WHICH I WANT!!
Many reviews mention the gay self loathing that the film exposes. I just do not see it! Yes, Allen and Micheal do not want to be gay, but what about Larry and Hank? And Emory?? I LOVE Emory and Harold! Yes, they are effeminate and queeny, but compared to the "straight acting, masculine only" attitudes of today, we need more Emorys and Harolds!
For past couple of weeks, I have been thinking about RuPaul's comments when an interviewer asked him for thoughts on today's gay culture:
"I'm disappointed with the kids who are, you know, obsessed with everything that is straight acting. I like my queens to be queeny. I like my queens to be faggoty. You know, I like faggotry. But there is not enough of that going around, you know. But hopefully with our movie [he is talking about STARRBOOTY - which is trashy, faggoty and GREAT], we'll be able to fix some of that. Maybe we'll be able to turn some little boys into real faggots."
Ru's comments reflect where I am feeling about life today.
